A Remarkable Honour: Receiving an Honorary Degree from the University of West London
It’s not often that you have the chance to pause and reflect on your journey. This week, I had the privilege of doing just that as I stood among an extraordinary group of individuals to receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of West London.
Sharing this moment with other honourees, including Anthony Capuano, CEO of Marriott International, added to the sense of occasion. His leadership in shaping a global brand and commitment to excellence are inspiring, and it was humbling to stand alongside someone who has made such a significant mark on the world stage.
The University of West London is an institution with a clear purpose—equipping its students with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the real world. This aligns closely with what we strive to do at TechStart: provide practical opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and build careers that matter. The university’s ethos of inclusivity and innovation is something I have long admired, making this recognition even more meaningful.
For me, this honour is not just a personal milestone. It represents the collective effort of so many people I’ve worked with over the years—mentors, colleagues, and, most importantly, the young people who have joined TechStart programmes. Their determination to overcome challenges and succeed is what drives me every day.
As I accepted the award, I reflected on the journey that brought me here. From arriving in the UK as a young immigrant to founding TechStart, the path has been shaped by the belief that opportunities should not depend on where you come from, but on where you want to go. This principle has guided our work, helping young people break through barriers and achieve their potential.
To be recognised by such a respected institution is a humbling reminder of the responsibility we all share—to give back, to create opportunities for others, and to work towards a future where no one is left behind.
To the graduates of the University of West London, I offer this: the world needs your ideas, your energy, and your commitment. Whether you’re building careers, businesses, or communities, remember that success isn’t only about individual achievement but also about the impact you have on those around you.
Thank you to the University of West London for this incredible honour, and congratulations to my fellow honourees, including Anthony Capuano, whose example demonstrates the global possibilities of dedicated leadership. This recognition isn’t the end of a journey - it’s encouragement to keep going, keep building, and keep believing in what we can achieve together.
